Focus and Scope

The Focus:

PLA Inside Out anchors PLA work as central to our thinking about teaching and learning, to support and recognize scholarly work in the field of prior learning, to provoke new ideas and experiences in PLA practices, to provide a central repository for PLA resources, and to place our current work in historical context.  PLA Inside Out is a space in which we can continue to explore the theoretical underpinnings of our common work and understand the research that supports these theories. The journal also encourages the sharing of PLA practices, becomes an opportunity to reflect on what we do and why we do it, and is designed as an occasion for people to ask questions and get responses to them from colleagues from across the world.

The Scope:

PLA Inside Out is a refereed, open access e-journal that is available free of charge on the Internet.

New articles are available twice a year (fall and spring).  In addition, there are regular opportunities for critical dialogue within and between each new issue, along with an editors’ blog.  Each issue includes theory, research, practice, case studies, literature reviews and other writings.  PLA Inside Out is a resource for those engaged in PLA: access to ongoing research, a networking site, a source for conference news, and a link to other sources.

Practice Today

This section of PLAIO is dedicated to ongoing discussions of current practices in the field. Our hope is that through reading each other’s observations about different ways of working with students, we will both become more familiar with the wide range of current practices in PLA, and also collectively engaged in addressing some of the difficult ongoing debates in the field.

We welcome articles and case studies that explore the opportunities and limitations of individual systems of PLA. (What is working? What challenges remain? What populations of students are served particularly well or poorly by different methods of PLA instruction and assessment?) We also welcome discussions of innovative practices and assessments of student experiences.

Peer Review Process

All inquiry manuscripts (research and theory-based) submitted to PLA Inside Out are double-blind peer-reviewed by at least two appropriate scholars/professionals in the field.  Reviews, case studies, and other writings (including invited essays, practice pieces, and interviews) will be reviewed by the co-editors. Normal turnaround for the evaluation of manuscripts is 16 weeks from the date of receipt.

 

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
